NFPA Fire Safety Educational Memorial Fund Scholarship Program ON HOLD

NFPA believes that timing is propitious for us to take a closer look at the overall process and to review and revamp the program in a way to make it more robust, increasing awareness and participation. We have decided to put the 2015 NFPA Fire Safety Educational Memorial Fund Scholarship Program ON HOLD while we evaluate. Our intent is to launch a new and improved program of support in the future. We will continue to keep you informed on the status of the program. 


A $5,000 scholarship awarded to students enrolled in fire protection engineering based on the student's academic record, fire protection interest, and academic potential.

The first recipient of the 2012/2013 Frank J. Fee Scholarship is Christine Pongratz. She is a senior at the University of Maryland Clark School of Engineering studying Fire Protection Engineering. She also has a minor in International engineering, and traveled to Australia in January 2012 where she enrolled in a study abroad course involving business, engineering, and her keen interest in performance-based design. Over the summer, Christine interned at ARUP, in Cambridge Massachusetts. This year she was elected President of the Salamander Fire Protection Engineering Honorary Society, and is also a teaching assistant for the sophomore Fire Protection Engineering course titled, Life Safety Analysis. Aside from school, she enjoys playing volleyball, and has been a part of the University of Maryland woman’s club team since her freshman year. She also is a member of Sigma Kappa sorority, and is active on the philanthropy committee.

The second recipient of the 2012/2013 Frank J. Fee Scholarship is Zachary Tran Jeffrey. He is currently a senior in Fire Protection Engineering and has thoroughly enjoyed his time in the department since he joined in his second semester of freshman year. As his senior year progresses, he looks forward to more challenging classes and graduating in the Spring. After graduation, Zach plans to continue his education in Fire Protection at the University of Maryland through the 5 year B.S./M.S. Program. As for a future career, he hopes to get involved with fire research or fire investigation. Currently, Zach is working with FireTEC, Fire Protection Engineering’s research lab, and with Koffel Associates. He is also involved with the UMD Chapter of SFPE and Salamander, the honorary Fire Protection Engineering Fraternity. In addition, he is a member of the University of Maryland Ultimate Frisbee team and was one of the captains of the B-Team for the 2011-2012 season.
