What is NFPA 409?
NFPA 409: Document Scope

1.1 Scope. 1.1.1 This standard contains the minimum requirements for the proper construction of aircraft hangars and protection of aircraft hangars from fire. 1.1.2 This standard applies only to buildings or structures used for aircraft storage, maintenance, or related activities. Other uses within an aircraft hangar shall be protected in accordance with other applicable NFPA Standards.

This standard helps safeguard life and property through requirements for the proper construction and fire protection of aircraft hangars used for aircraft storage, maintenance, or related activities.

What does NFPA 409 address?

Comprehensive coverage includes provisions for the full range of construction and protection issues for Group I, II, III, and IV aircraft hangers from clear space distance, landing gear pits, exit and access requirements, and grounding facilities for static electricity to fire protection systems, portable extinguishers, detection and actuation systems, and water supply. Criteria also address paint hangars and unfueled aircraft hangars.
