"Significant changes in the 2009 edition of NFPA 54 will yield big safety benefits. For example, the Code addresses a problem related to certain radiant heaters, which, after expanding and contracting, can lead to dangerous leaks developing in certain piping materials. The 2009 NFPA 54 requires a specific type of piping to be used with infrared radiant tube heaters to avoid this hazard. The new Code also requires that corrugated stainless steel tubing (CSST) be electrically bonded to the building's grounding electrode system; this provides a path to ground so lightning strikes are less likely to cause leaks to develop. NFPA 54 reflects the changes in technology that lead to improved operations and procedures throughout the industry."
