NFPA®'s Wildland Fire Operations Division and Firewise® staff will hold the 2013 Backyards & Beyond Wildland Fire Education Conference, a one of a kind event, in Salt Lake City, Utah November 14-16, 2013, and a pre-conference workshop, Assessing Wildfire Hazards in the Home Ignition Zone Workshop November 12-13, 2013.
2013 Backyards & Beyond Wildland Fire Education Conference
November 14-16 (Thursday-Saturday)
The Backyards & Beyond Conference is widely regarded as the premier event for wildland fire safety information and brings together a diverse audience of leading wildfire experts, emergency responders, Firewise® community representatives, community planners, civic leaders, homeowners and residents, insurance professionals, landscape architects and others. The Conference offers attendees a chance to network with like-minded professionals and share best-practices that they can take back to their communities and workplace.
More than 50 breakout sessions will cover five educational tracks to explore key issues in preparing homes and neighborhoods to cope with brush, grass, and forest fires. Tracks include:
- Community Safety Approaches & Strategies
- Home Construction & Landscape Design
- Research (Physical, Social, Ecology and Environmental)
- Technology, Policy & Regulations
- Wildfire Planning, Suppression & Operations

Assessing Wildfire Hazards in the Home Ignition Zone
November 12-13 (Tuesday-Wednesday)
Prior to the Backyards and Beyond Conference, the ever-popular Assessing Wildfire Hazards in the Home Ignition Zone will be offered. This is an interactive workshop designed to teach individuals how to conduct a comprehensive assessment of homes and property, and suggest mitigation efforts to help reduce the risks associated with wildland fires. It is the only wildfire hazard assessment training nationally recognized by agencies, professionals and organizations. This workshop will also include a field exercise where participants will perform a home ignition zone evaluation, practicing the information they have learned in the classroom. Note: The field exercise will involve some walking and standing, but not strenuous exercise. Please wear/bring comfortable clothing that suits the weather. Transportation will be provided.
