NFPA 301 provides minimum requirements, with due regard to function, for the design, operation, and maintenance of merchant vessels for safety to life from fire and similar emergencies. Patterned after the Life Safety Code®, it provides requirements for towing vessels, cargo vessels, and passenger vessels.

- Clarified requirements for automatic sprinkler protection for various classes of marine vessels
- Expanded requirements related to testing of interior finish materials to reflect the updated reference documents and testing procedures.
