Description

The Waldo Canyon Fire was the most expensive fire (insurance claims) in Colorado's history and is also the most destructive in the number of homes destroyed. Following the Waldo Canyon wildfire in Colorado Springs, Colorado, an in-depth mitigation assessment and companion video was produced by the Fire Adapted Communities (FAC) Coalition. The report Lessons Learned From Waldo Canyon and video Creating Fire Adapted Communities have been packaged together on the Creating a Fire Adapted Community DVD.

The report is the product of a 3-day post-fire visit by the FAC Coalition's national partners to assess the performance of a decade of wildland/urban interface mitigation practices completed under the management of the City of Colorado Springs Fire Department and in collaboration with local residents. The FAC assessment team included experts in structural assessments, forestry, social science and public education and included representation from the USDA Forest Service, Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA®), and The Nature Conservancy (TNC); they were accompanied by staff from the Colorado Springs Fire Department's (CSFD) Division of the Fire Marshal. The team surveyed 40 destroyed, damaged and undamaged homes; and toured fuels management projects located within the city's 28,800 acres of wildland/urban interface.

The SCS features interviews with Colorado Springs Fire Department personnel and homeowners impacted by the Waldo Canyon wildfire -- all poignantly share the history of the city's mitigation efforts, community outreach activities and successful collaboration efforts with local residents. The mitigation assessment report and video work in tandem to reinforce the importance of communities becoming fire adapted. (15 min., DVD, 2013)
