NFPA®'s online course covers many aspects of overcurrent protection, so you're better prepared for NEC® compliance.

Available only from NFPA, the NFPA 70®: National Electrical Code® (NEC) Overcurrent Protection Self-Guided Online Course from the NEC Self-Guided Online Series explores the methods of protecting people, conductors, equipment, and other property from the effects of overcurrent.

Work at your own pace through online lessons addressing the types of overcurrent and overcurrent protection as well as the selection of an appropriate type and rating of overcurrent device. This self-guided online course also covers the requirements for locations of overcurrent devices both in conductors and in the building or structure where they are used. You will also learn how to locate requirements for overcurrent protection in different types of conductors and for specific types of circuits or equipment.

Upon completion you should be able to:

  • List the types and functions of overcurrent protective devices
  • Explain the association between short-circuit ratings and interrupting ratings
  • Select maximum ratings for overcurrent devices for branch circuit and feeder conductors
  • List the conditions under which an overcurrent device can have a rating greater than the conductor ampacity
  • Determine when the overcurrent protection limits for small conductors apply
  • Locate overcurrent protection requirements for flexible cords, fixture wires, and extension cord sets
  • Determine proper locations for overcurrent devices -- in which conductors, where in the circuit, and where on the premises
  • Describe and locate requirements for protection of feeder taps and transformer secondary conductors
  • Identify conductors and equipment that have special or additional requirements for overcurrent protection
  • Locate requirements for overcurrent protection of transformers, panelboards, and motors
