Jeff Sargent was invited by AMAD, Technical Consultation and Laboratories Firm, in cooperation with the Saudi Ministry of Electricity and Water to participate and present in a workshop on implementing standards, more specifically how the NEC is developed, implemented, and enforced in the US. The event took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on March 12 and March 13, 2012. The Saudi government has adopted a building code with electrical and energy management components, but has not provided a mechanism for it to be implemented and enforced in construction projects. The focus of this workshop was to learn about the electrical and energy code implementation in other countries. The US energy code experience was presented by Mr. Richard M. Okawa, P.E. Deputy Vice President of Global Services and Business Development for the International Code Council (ICC).
The workshop was primarily attended by engineering firms doing electrical and energy management work in Saudi Arabia. The US experience in developing, implementing, and enforcing building construction codes and standards is highly respected in Saudi Arabia and the NEC is well recognized. The experiences shared at this meeting help the Saudis development a strategy for implementing their electrical and energy codes and standards.
