Fire investigations

Since the early 1940s, NFPA´s Fire Investigations division has collected, analyzed, and reported detailed fire experience data through on-site investigations of technical or educational significance to:
  • establish, analyze, and document facts on fires of high technical or educational interest.
  • communicate important fire protection lessons to NFPA technical committees and to the fire protection community.
  • provide results important for the direction of technical programs.
  • technically support state and local officials.

Areas documented during the course of the investigations include details of fire ignition, growth, and development; contributions of building construction, interior finish and furnishings; fire detection and suppression scenarios; performance of structures exposed to the fire; smoke movement and control; human reaction (response) and evacuation; fire fighting and rescue; fire propagation as a function of human reaction time; and the extent of life loss, injury and property damage.

NFPA maintains communications with data sources throughout the U.S. and Canada, particularly state and provincial fire marshals and metropolitan fire chiefs. NFPA investigations are carried out through the cooperation of federal, state and local fire officials.

Most NFPA fire investigation reports are free for NFPA members.
See the list of fire investigation categories below. Paper copies of each report may also be purchased ($27 for NFPA members; $30 for non-members). Prepayment is required. Call +1 617 984-7445 or  e-mail NFPA's Morgan Technical Library. You can also download a full list of available reports. (PDF, 225 KB)
