2009 election results for CFPS Board of Directors

The CFPS Board of Directors election results were announced at the Annual Certificate Holders General Meeting on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at NFPA’s Conference and Exposition at McCormick Place Chicago, Chicago, IL.

There were 21 candidates running for 6 open positions. Elected to 3 year terms were: Gregory W. Haley,  Robert S. Fleming, Nancy G. Makey and John R. Waters expiring in June 2012; elected to 2 year terms expiring in June 2011 were: Jack L. Cottet and David W. Ward.

The Board of Directors reorganized and elected the following to the Executive Committee. Re-elected to the position of Chairman was Greg Haley; elected to the position of Vice Chairman was Thomas K. Varney and elected to the position of Secretary/Treasurer was John R. Waters. Director positions were filled by Jack Cottet, Robert S. Fleming, Nancy Makey and David Ward.

Special thanks for their dedication and commitment to CFPS to: Justin B. Biller, Ralph E. Bless, Jr., Chris Butts, Eddie D. Elsberry, David W. Hague, David W. Hollinger, Dan Kerrigan, Robert L. Moore, Jeff Pendley, Edward C. Pierce, Thomas J. Price, Theodore J. Salyers, John I. Strouse, Albert K. Zorn and Jeffrey D. Zwirn.

The CFPS Board of Directors would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the service, dedication and commitment of two of its outgoing Directors, James N. Hearn and John I. Strouse. Jim has been a valued member of the Board of Directors and has served on various CFPS committees completing his term in June, 2009 after serving 8 years. John’s service to CFPS began at its inception. He was elected to the Board of Directors in 1976. He held the position of Chairman, Vice Chairman and Director as well as chairing many of the standing committees throughout his 33 years of continuous service.

Certified Fire Protection Specialist

The Certified Fire Protection Specialist Board (CFPS) was formed in 1971 for the purpose of documenting competency and offering professional recognition for individuals involved in fire protection, fire safety, and fire prevention. In 1998, CFPS and NFPA partnered to jointly offer this highly regarded certification program.

The CFPS Board credential has been awarded to more than 1,000 professionals and is internationally recognized as a mark of achievement within the fire protection field. This group of professionals includes risk managers, loss control specialists, fire officers, fire marshals, fire inspectors, safety managers, fire protection consultants, designers, code enforcers, loss prevention professionals, building code officials, commercial real estate managers and others who have responsibilities dealing with the application of fire safety, fire protection, prevention, and suppression technologies.

CFPS examination
The three-hour open book CFPS examination is comprised of 100 multiple-choice questions. The examination is based on a job analysis of fire protection specialists. The examination questions are referenced in the NFPA Fire Protection Handbook. See sample exam questions. Attention CFPS exam candidates: The current CFPS exam is based upon the 19th editionor the 20th edition of the Fire Protection Handbook .

Important information regarding tabbing the Fire Protection Handbook
The Fire Protection Handbook may be tabbed before the exam with commercial permanent adhesive type tabs similar to those provided with the Fire Protection Handbook. HOWEVER, Post-it type notes and flags or other type of easily moveable tabs or physical markers (including paper clips) are NOT permitted at any time. 

Test options  

  1. The CFPS examination is available as a computer-based exam on demand at test assessment centers throughout the U.S. Once your CFPS registration form and registration fee have been processed by NFPA, you will be issued an authorization letter with instructions on how to schedule the CFPS exam as a computer-based test. Our test delivery contractor is Schroeder Measurement Technologies, Inc. You can locate testing centers by visiting the test provider’s Web site
  2. The CFPS examination is available in paper and pencil format. The CFPS Exam dates listed above on the right hand side provide those locations where a paper and pencil format is used. Candidates who have been issued a user ID and password in order to register for a computer based exam and experience difficulty in registering should contact the testing vendor Iso Quality Testing customer support toll free at +1 866 773-1114.
