What is NFPA 12?

1.1* Scope. A.1.1 Portable carbon dioxide equipment is covered in NFPA 10. The use of carbon dioxide for inerting is covered in NFPA 69. 1.1.1 This standard contains minimum requirements for carbon dioxide fire-extinguishing systems. 1.1.2 This standard includes only the necessary essentials to make it workable in the hands of those skilled in this field.

This standard contains requirements for carbon dioxide fire-extinguishing systems to help ensure that such equipment will function as intended throughout its life. It is intended for those who purchase, design, install, test, inspect, approve, list, operate, or maintain these systems.

What does NFPA 12 address?

General information is provided on restrictions for normally occupied enclosures; carbon dioxide use and limitations; personnel safety; electrical clearances; detection, actuation, and control; carbon dioxide supply; distribution systems; and inspection, maintenance, and instruction. Separate chapters address total flooding systems, local application systems, hand hose line systems, standpipe systems and mobile supply, and marine systems.
