What is NFPA 51A?
NFPA 51A: Document Scope

1.1 Scope. This standard shall apply to plants that are engaged in the generation and compression of acetylene and in the charging of acetylene cylinders, either as their sole operation or in conjunction with facilities for charging other compressed gas cylinders.

Effective July 24, 2015, the NFPA Standards Council approved the withdrawal of NFPA 51A and its content be incorporated into NFPA 55.

This standard presents safety requirements for the design, construction, and installation of acetylene cylinder charging plants to provide safeguards for the protection of the plant, its employees, and the public.

What does NFPA 51A address?

Provisions apply to plants that are engaged in the generation and compression of acetylene and in the charging of acetylene cylinders, either as their sole operation or in conjunction with facilities for charging other compressed gas cylinders. In addition to criteria for plant location and construction, requirements are provided for acetylene generators, gasholders, compressors, piping, and manifolds.
