What is NFPA 1144?
NFPA 1144: Document Scope
1.1* Scope. This standard provides a methodology for assessing wildland fire ignition hazards around existing structures, residential developments, and subdivisions and improved property or planned property improvement that will be located in a wildland/urban interface area, and provides minimum requirements for new construction to reduce the potential of structure ignition from wildland fires. A.1.1 Residential developments and subdivisions are intended to include clubhouses, community meeting and activity centers, municipal buildings, offices, farm and ranch structures, and other structures within development boundaries.

This standard provides a methodology for assessing wildland fire ignition hazards around existing structures and provides requirements for new construction to reduce the potential of structure ignition from wildland fires.

What does NFPA 1144 address?

Provisions specify how to perform a hazard assessment of each structure ignition zone to determine relative risk, the extent of wildland fire hazard, and appropriate mitigation measures. NFPA 1144 also presents design, construction, and landscaping criteria for fire agencies, land use planners, architects, developers, and local government for planning development in areas that might be threatened by wildfire.
