This standard prescribes requirements for the design and construction of high challenge fire walls, fire walls, and fire barrier walls, including protection of openings and penetrations, for use in protecting lives and property from fire.
Provisions apply to walls that are required to separate buildings or subdivide a building to prevent fire spread. The minimum fire resistance rating of a wall assembly is outside NFPA 221's scope. Topics include double wall assemblies, cantilevered fire walls, opening protectives, ducts and air transfer openings, continuity, and clearance.
