NFPA Safe Community Program

The NFPA Safe Community program was created with the goal of reaching more people with NFPA's nationally acclaimed education programs.

To become an NFPA Safe Community, a community must be using at least one of NFPA's educational programs including, Learn Not to Burn® PreschoolRisk Watch® and Remembering WhenTM..

Each year, a community-wide event, such as a safety fair, must be held that focuses on the NFPA educational program you are using. In order to be awarded NFPA Safe community status, the community must complete and submit an application every year.

By making NFPA educational programs a community initiative, it opens the door to work with many different organizations and reach people of all ages in the community.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is NFPA Safe Community a grant program?
No. There is no grant money associated with being recognized as an NFPA Safe Community.

What does the program cost?
There is no cost to apply to the NFPA Safe Community program.

What do we have to do?
Implement NFPA’s Learn Not to Burn® Preschool, Risk Watch®, or Remembering When™ program. Conduct a community-wide event focusing on the NFPA educational program you use in your community. Renew local recognition status each year

What’s in it for me?
The program provides an image incentive to communities, which once recognized, can identify themselves as an NFPA Safe Community. There are also additional benefits, which include recognition decals to display in municipal buildings, hotels, restaurants or other locations and listing on the NFPA Safe Communities Directory.

What signifies a community?
A community is a county, municipality, city, town, village, hamlet, etc that has implemented the Learn Not to Burn® Preschool, Risk Watch, or Remembering When™ program.

How will the public know the community is an NFPA Safe Community?
When municipal buildings, hotels or other locations post the NFPA Safe Community decals, residents, business owners and visitors will know their community is committed to keep people safe.

Where can I post my NFPA Safe Community decals?
Anywhere you want to post them. Communities have posted their signs in public buildings such as town halls, schools and libraries, while other recipients have posted the signs in hotels, restaurants or medical facilities within their community.

How long does the recognition last?
Recognition lasts for one year. To continue your recognition you must renew your status each year. Renewal ensures contact information is accurate allowing us to get the latest NFPA information to you.

After I renew, how will my community be recognized as a current NFPA Safe Community?
NFPA will send out a recognition letter and 15 decals with the current year to place within your community. Current year decals will demonstrate that your community is maintaining its status as an NFPA Safe Community with a commitment to keeping people safe from fire.

Do I have to renew?
Local communities are required to renew their NFPA Safe Community status every year. .
