NFPA 13, 13D, 13R: 2013 Changes Part I

NFPA 13 is part of the annual 2012 revision cycle and will be producing a new 2013 edition document. This session will focus on changes made during the latest revision cycle including changes to anti-freeze requirements, as well as storage concepts. The changes introduced in this session will be based on the technical committee position following the ROC meeting. The changes addressed assume that there are no certified amending motions during NFPA's annual meeting.

NFPA 25 – Chapter 14: Inside the Pipe

The requirements for internal inspection of piping and obstruction investigations have be rewritten several times since the first version of NFPA 25 was issued. The differences between internal inspections and obstruction investigations often get overlooked and the two concepts get merged into one concept taking a look inside piping. This session discusses the differences between the two concepts and how and when each process should be implemented.

Inspection and Maintenance of Portable Extinguishers

This session will review the requirements for inspection and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers in the 2010 Edition of NFPA 10. Potential changes to the next edition of the standard will also be discussed.

Fire Protection Schemes of Various Storage Arrangements

This session will cover the general requirements for the protection of storage as prescribed in Chapter 12 and Chapters 14-20 of NFPA 13. It will present a logical progression through determining the basic requirements for sprinkler protection to the requirements of different commodities, and the more specific requirements for different storage arrangements and different sprinkler types used for storage criteria.

Water Supplies

Water Supply is the backbone of any water based fire suppression system.  This session will deal with the various water supply types and applications with respect to applicable NFPA standards, NFPA 24, NFPA 13 and NFPA 20 to state a few.  Topics of discussion will include; city supply, tanks, and raw water supplies (e.g. ponds).

Sprinkler Obstructions Rules Explained

The impact an obstruction has on sprinkler spray patterns can vary greatly depending on the type of sprinkler head being used and the object causing the obstruction. This session will outline the requirements for providing sprinkler protection around potential obstructions. The differences between the obstruction rules in NFPA 13 and NFPA 13R/D will also be discussed along with examples of potential obstructions and how they can be addressed.

Introduction to Clean Agent Fire Suppression Systems

This session will provide an overview of clean agent fire suppression systems and the requirements of NFPA 2001. Attendees will become familiar with the various agents and technologies that are recognized by the standard and will gain a basic understanding of how the agents work, how to operate and maintain the system, and how they can be used safely.

Concept of a Residential Sprinkler System

What is a residential sprinkler system? The discussion in this session will focus on the differences of residential vs. commercial sprinklers,  common fire sprinkler myths, as well as how to go from protecting property  to protecting people. We will discuss the  pros and cons of various water sources (residential well, city water, etc).  Discussion of reducing construction costs by adding fire sprinklers to one & two family homes will also be discussed.

NFPA 13, 13D, 13R – Permissible Sprinkler Omissions

The global intent of NFPA 13 is to provide sprinkler protection throughout the premises. There are several conditions where sprinklers can be omitted from certain portions of a building. This seminar takes a section by section look at Section 8.15 of NFPA 13 providing specific areas where sprinklers can be omitted and the logic behind these omissions. Also covered will be areas of residential systems where sprinklers can be omitted from the design.

NFPA 25: Roles and Responsibilities

This session will address the many myths and misconceptions about who is responsible for the maintenance of fire sprinkler systems and other water based fire protection systems. Also, the important administrative requirements of NFPA 25, including documentation requirements, that need to be followed to properly maintain such systems. Participants will be able to identify all of the key requirements of Chapter 4 in the 2011 edition of NFPA 25, and will be able to identify the different types of contracts that can be established with inspection, testing and maintenance service providers.
