February 11, 2010 – The National Fire Protection Association
(NFPA) Board of Directors has appointed a new member, Michael D. Snyder of Midland, Mich., to the Association’s Standards Council.
The Board also re-appointed current members Fred Leber of Leber/Rubes Inc. in Canada and Roland Huggins of American Fire Sprinkler Association, Inc. in Texas, for three-year terms.
All appointments were effective January 1, 2010.
With nearly 20 years of service to Dow Corning in various positions, Snyder was named the global director of safety, industrial hygiene, and loss prevention in December 2008. In this role, he is responsible for the leadership of Dow Corning’s global programs in Employee Health & Safety, Emergency Preparedness, and Chemical Process Safety.
The new appointee has been a member of the NFPA since 1987 and has contributed to several technical committees. He currently serves on the Technical Committee on Pre-Incident Planning and the Technical Committee on Operations for NFPA 30, Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code. In addition, Snyder is the fire chief for the Auburn-Williams Fire Department in Auburn, Mich. and has been appointed to the NFPA 1720 committee.
Snyder received his Bachelors of Science in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University. He also holds a professional engineer license and is a certified fire protection specialist.
The NFPA Standards Council, a 13 member body appointed by the board of directors of NFPA, is charged with overseeing the NFPA codes and standards making process. Generally, the duties of the Council include supervising activities related to NFPA codes and standards development, acting as administer of rules and regulations, and serving as an appeals body.
NFPA has been a worldwide leader in providing fire, electrical, building, and life safety to the public since 1896. The mission of the international nonprofit organization is to reduce the worldwide burden of fire and other hazards on the quality of life by providing and advocating consensus codes and standards, research, training, and education.
