– The National Fire Protection Association
(NFPA) announced today that research published in Fire Technology
- its international, peer-reviewed quarterly journal - received Lloyd's first “Science of Risk” Prize. The prize is awarded to high quality scientific research in five risk categories, and recognizes outstanding scientific research that broadens insurers’ understanding of risk.
The prize recognizes the research that is highlighted in the paper titled "A Novel Multiscale Methodology for Simulating Tunnel Ventilation Flows During Fires”, which was published in the January 2011 issue of Fire Technology. It was written by Francesco Colella, Guillermo Rein, Romano Borchiellini and Jose L. Torero and addressed methods for increasing tunnel safety through a new modeling technique that improves the related risk assessment process.
“The paper reflected innovative, progressive concepts that can significantly contribute to reductions in fire risk associated with tunnels,” says Kathleen H. Almand, P.E., associate editor of Fire Technology and executive director of the Fire Protection and Research Foundation, an affiliate of NFPA. “We’re thrilled that Lloyd’s recognized the value of the authors’ research and findings and that they selected Fire Technology for its dissemination.”
