NFPA continues the move toward an all-digital public input process for codes and standards revision
Beginning with the 44 codes and standards on the fall 2016 revision cycle, NFPA’s code revision and public input process was completely digital for the first time in the organization’s 118-year history.
The public input closing date for the first draft for these 44 documents was January 5. For the first time, paper submissions were not accepted during this public input period, nor will they be accepted going forward. Those who want to make public input on a code or standard should now use NFPA’s online submission system. The deadline for the second draft of these codes is November 16, 2015.
NFPA has accepted digital public input online for several years, but until now the public could also submit comments via traditional paper forms. NFPA decided to phase out paper submissions to make it easier for more members to participate. Paper submissions are still being accepted on codes and standards currently in the middle of their revision cycles, but going forward all public input on codes and standards beginning new revision cycles will move to an all-digital format.
To make an online comment, visit the code’s online document information page, or visit nfpa.org/codes-and-standards/document-information-pages (create link) for a full list. From there:
Once you are on the document page, select the "Next Edition" tab.
Choose the link "The next edition of this standard is now open for Public Input." You will be asked to sign-in or create a free online account with NFPA before using this system.
Follow the online instructions to submit your Public Input
- Once a Public Input is saved or submitted in the system, it can be located on the "My Profile" page by selecting "My Public Input / Comments" in the left navigation bar.
