NFPA opens Sacramento office
California office will work with state agencies to amend building and fire codes

October 16, 2003 – The nonprofit NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) has established a new office in Sacramento. NFPA's Sacramento staff will continue working closely with state agencies to make state-specific amendments to NFPA's model building and fire codes.

Each time the state adopts a national model code, state agencies are responsible for making amendments that are specific to California. NFPA has agreed to support the state agencies' efforts.

Last July, the California Building Standards Commission selected NFPA 5000™, Building Construction and Safety Code™ and NFPA 1, Uniform Fire Code™ as the bases for the 2004 California Building Code and California Fire Code.

"NFPA's Sacramento presence will enable our technical staff to continue to work hand-in-hand with state agencies to address California-specific code issues, expediting the preparation of proposed state amendments," said James M. Shannon, NFPA's president and CEO. "This action demonstrates our commitment to supporting the state, code users, and the people of California throughout the use of NFPA's building and fire codes."

Sacramento-based NFPA staff will work directly with state agencies with code promulgation authority, providing technical and clerical support throughout California's code amendment process. Karen Stein, administrative office manager, recently opened the office, which is located at:

1107 9th Street, Suite 680
Sacramento, CA  95814
Phone: (916) 440-1060
