Award will support local fire safety program

March 28, 2006 – The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) announced today that the Tuscaloosa Fire & Rescue Service is the winner of the 2006 Rolf H. Jensen Memorial Public Education Grant for its proposal to implement a community-wide fire safety education program targeting senior citizens in high-risk communities.

The Jensen Grant is presented annually to a local fire department to support a community-wide fire and life safety campaign.

Tuscaloosa Fire & Rescue will use the $5,000 award to implement PROJECT F.I.R.E. (Fire and Injury Reduction Education), a community-wide fire and life safety education program to prevent residential fires and injuries among Tuscaloosa’s at-risk senior citizens in Alberta City and West End. The foundation for this project will be NFPA’s nationally acclaimed Remembering When: A Fire and Fall Prevention Program for Older Adults™. Tuscaloosa Fire & Rescue will also implement an awareness campaign to ensure each resident has a working smoke alarm in the targeted areas.

The Rolf H. Jensen Grant was named for the founder of one of the largest fire protection consulting firms in the world. Recipients are chosen based on these criteria: demonstration of a plan to implement a community-wide fire and life safety program/campaign aimed at the general public or a targeted group, clearly stated goals and objectives, staff assigned to implement the program/campaign, and a final report, including an overview of the project, number of people reached, media coverage, life saves, etc.

NFPA has been a worldwide leader in providing fire, electrical, building, and life safety to the public since 1896. The mission of the international nonprofit organization is to reduce the worldwide burden of fire and other hazards on the quality of life by providing and advocating consensus codes and standards, research, training and education.
