DETROIT – Chevrolet and OnStar, in a joint effort with The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), selected Detroit to be the final city in a nationwide training tour for first responders preparing to deal with emergency situations involving electric vehicles, like the Chevrolet Volt. To date, more than 1,600 fire and emergency service leaders and trainers have participated in this program. Over the next three days, another 400 Detroit-area first responders will receive training.
In addition to Detroit, the tour made stops in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Austin, Washington D.C. and New York City.
“This national training program has come full circle – back to Detroit with several more sessions for our hometown first responders,” said Gay Kent, GM director of Vehicle Safety and Crashworthiness. “Our goal with this program is to help public safety personnel become as comfortable working around electric vehicles as they are with conventional vehicles today.”
“We are pleased that NFPA, Chevrolet and OnStar have made this training available to us,” said Chief Gregory Williams, Detroit Fire Department. “Our firefighters work hard to be prepared for any situation involving any type of vehicle. This training will go a long way to ensure that we have knowledge of these new electric vehicles.”
Safety trainers delivered presentations covering topics specific to electric vehicles such as power shut-off procedures, lithium ion battery details, locations of high-strength steel and cut points for extrication. In addition, a Volt – recently used during an extrication exercise – was on-site for hands-on training for first responders.
Chevrolet and OnStar worked with the NFPA to develop this program to ensure firefighters and first responders are equipped with information and resources regarding electric vehicles. The collaboration involved the co-development of safety resources, including web-based training materials, an extrication video and shared resources for instructor-led safety presentations.
