The Fire Protection Research Foundation to develop research needs agenda for NISTs

Agenda will accelerate the implementation of performance-based fire engineering

September 15, 2011The Fire Protection Research Foundation (Foundation) is working with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to assist in the development of a prioritized research agenda for their new structural fire resistance testing facility, which is part of the Engineering Research Laboratory. The facility, with its unique capability to test large scale structural elements, systems and their connections in the fire condition, is scheduled for completion in 2012. The Foundation is the research affiliate of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

Recently, NIST and the Foundation hosted a workshop for industry leaders at NIST’s Engineering Laboratory in Gaithersburg, Maryland, to review and further develop this information, and create a prioritized national agenda. Forty representatives from academia, engineering, and the materials industry provided their perspective on an agenda that is designed to accelerate the implementation of performance-based fire engineering for structures post 9/11.

The Foundation is scheduled to complete this project in December.
