Fire Safety Design and Sustainable Buildings Symposium in Chicago November 7 and 8

Event to focus on challenges and opportunities for fire safety in sustainable design

July 31, 2012 – The Fire Protection Research Foundation, an affiliate of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), in collaboration with the Chicago and Illinois chapters of the American Institute of Architects, the Chicago Committee on High Rise Buildings, the Society of Fire Protection Engineers and the Council for Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat will present Fire Safety Design and Sustainable Buildings: Challenges and Opportunities, November 7 and 8, 2012 at the Courtyard Marriott Chicago Downtown/Magnificent Mile. 

The symposium will feature perspectives from architects, engineers, the sustainability community, and research institutions on the challenges and opportunities of integrating fire safety and sustainable design. Gordon Gill, Partner, Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture will keynote the symposium which will be comprised of three different sessions that address:

  • Sustainable building design features and impact on fire safety
  • Fire safety features and impact on sustainable building design
  • Life cycle sustainability of structures including fire safety features/practices.

The goal of this event is to bring the fire protection and architectural communities together to discuss these topics and share ideas and best practices for sustainable fire safe design.

Best Practices Showcase to be featured
The Symposium Program Committee invites interested parties to submit one-page abstracts of recent successful case studies that illustrate how good design can innovatively achieve fire safety and sustainability goals. These case studies will be featured on the symposium website and highlighted at the event with recognition to submitters.
