Foreword

In 2006 the Fire Protection Research Foundation (FPRF) undertook a research project to develop tools for the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Liquefied Natural Gas Technical Committee to evaluate liquefied natural gas (LNG) dispersion models. This work was carried out by the Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL), the research agency of the Health and Safety Executive. HSL delivered a Model Evaluation Protocol (MEP), which contained a structure for complete model evaluation (Ivings et al, 2007). A partial evaluation of some common current dispersion models was also carried out. Validation is a key part of model evaluation. Ivings et al (2007) set out the validation requirements for

application of their MEP. This requires the construction of a Model Validation Database to hold sufficient information on a range of test configurations (datasets for field and wind tunnel trials - including release conditions, meteorological data, etc.) to permit model set-up and simulation. The Database must also contain test results in the form of tabulated concentration data against which model output is to be compared, and temperature data where available. HSL was contracted by the FPRF to construct this Database.

This document provides a guide to the LNG Model Validation Database. The MEP (Ivings et al, 2007) provides much useful background to the Database and it should be read in conjunction with the present document.
