Foreword

NFPA 59A Standard for the Production, Storage, and Handling of Liquefied Natural Gas, provides limited guidance on the use of vapor dispersion modeling for the analysis of safety features for LNG facilities. In 2006, the Foundation undertook a research project to develop tools for the Committee to evaluate LNG dispersion models. The Foundation report from this project, authored by the Health and Safety Laboratories, UK, can be found on the Foundation website at http://www.nfpa.org/foundation. The report describes a Model Evaluation Protocol which includes a checklist of model evaluation criteria and a structure for complete model evaluation. As described in this report, an important element in LNG Dispersion Modeling is an accurate representation of the LNG spill source term.

This project has been jointly funded by the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and FPRF, and aims to provide a state-of-the-art review of source term models which predict the early development of a release of LNG and an approach for assessing the adequacy of such models. The main focus is on models of pool spread and vaporisation.
