U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated average of 229,500 vehicle fires per year in 2007-2011. These fires caused an average of 328 civilian fire deaths, 1,426 civilian fire injures and $1.4 billion dollars in direct property damage per year. Vehicles include: passenger and freight road vehicles, such as cars, trucks, motorcycles and recreational vehicles; rail and water transport; aircraft; industrial, agricultural and construction vehicles; and miscellaneous other vehicles. Highway vehicles are vehicles intended to be driven on roads. A highway vehicle fire can occur anywhere, not just on highways.

This analysis was  prepared for the National Transportation Safety Board’s (NTSB’s) Public Hearing on Motorcoach Fires on August 8th and 9th, 2006 that was called in response to the September 2005 Texas motorcoach fire that claimed 23 lives. The analysis has statistics on bus and school bus fires reported to local fire departments.
