Abstract

In 2005-2009, U.S. municipal fire departments reported 1,480 non-confined structure fires per year involving office equipment, including 750 home fires and 730 non-home fires, with associated annual home losses of seven civilian deaths, 49 civilian injuries and $23 million in direct property damage, and associated annual non-home losses of one civilian death, 16 civilian injuries and $51 million in direct property damage. Computer-related equipment accounted for 76% of the home office equipment fires and 66% of the non-home office equipment fires.
