Sparky
Says...
Grade
1
By: Michele
Clayton, San Pedro, CA
2002 Teacher of the Year
This is a concentration
card game.
Objective
- The children demonstrate
Risk Watch safety knowledge by matching question cards to answer cards
in the different risk areas.
Preparation
The teacher prepares
cards based on previously taught concepts.
1. Sparky Says is written on the back of each flashcard.
2. A question or an answer is written on the front of each card.
3. A sample question that can be written on the front of the card is: What
do you do if you hear the smoke detector?
4. A sample answer that can be written on the front of the card is: Get
out quickly, go to your meeting place, and report the fire.
5. It is helpful to place a matching sticker on the bottom of the matching cards
so that children playing can self-check thereby knowing if the have
the correct pair.
Procedure
1. All of the cards are placed face down on the table or floor
2. The first player picks up a card and reads it to the class (if playing with
the whole group) or to his partner or group. He may have the answer card or he
may have the question card. BEFORE he picks up the next card to try to make a
match, he must tell the other players which card he needs thereby demonstrating
knowledge of the rule. If he doesnt know he must ask for help from his group.
3. If he makes a match, he collects the pair and gets another turn. If he does
not make a match, the player to the left continues.
4. The game continues until all the cards are gone.
5. They are then reshuffled and the game begins again!
You may wish to review all the questions and answers that are specifically on
the game cards before the students try to play the game on their own.
Home Link
- This game can be played
at home with the whole family. Family members who are too young to read can
be read to and taught by the Risk Watch student!
Extension
- All question and answer
cards can be made for one specific Risk Watch area and/or they can be
added as more safety rules are learned.
