Lesson Plan: Identify Outdoor Electrical Safety Hazards.
Third/Fourth Grade
Identify outdoor electrical safety hazards.
Objectives
- Write a how-to paragraph on how to be safer during a thunderstorm.
- Place in sequence the process of getting to a safe place when confronted with a thunderstorm situation.
Preparation
- Review the Electrical Information Guide. Identify outdoor electrical safety hazards.
- Download and copy the provided Mr. Plug's® Electrical Safety Rules; Outdoor / Electrical Storm Safety Rules from the Electrical Information Guide.
- Download and copy the storm safety worksheet for each student.
Procedure
- Review the student sheets Mr. Plug's Electrical Safety Rules; Outdoor/Electrical Storm Safety Rules. Discuss the steps necessary for an effective escape from outdoor lightning and thunderstorms.
- Have students write a how-to paragraph explaining the proper way to escape from an electrical storm. Students will be given the steps for a safe exit but in a jumbled, incorrect order. Using the worksheet provided, they will put the steps in a corrected order.
- Provide the students with the storm safety worksheet.
- Students will write a paragraph on how to escape from the storm. They must put the steps in a correct order and elaborate on each step.
Enhancement
- Create a Mr. Plug Electrical Safety Word Puzzle using words that have something to do with electricity. Suggested words to start with might include: safety, electrical, lines, outlets, cord, wires, energy, light, plug, toaster, electric blanket. The children may create their word puzzles within the Mr. Plug drawing.
- Include five words that would be good conductors of electricity.
- Include two words that would be good insulators of electricity.
- Download and make copies of the Danger--High Voltage and Warning - High Voltage signs around the room. Notice that some outdoor electrical items are marked with warning signs. Others, like the ones we discussed in the Sillyville story and the Mr. Plug are not marked.
- Create a report on Thomas Alva Edison.
- Create a report on Benjamin Franklin.
