What Floats, What
Doesn't Float?
Grades
1-2
Objective
- Shown a variety of objects, students will use critical thinking skills to
determine whether the items will float or will not float. They will also reinforce
their knowledge of the water safety lessons in Risk Watch.
Core Subject Integration
- Science, health and safety
Materials
- container full of water
- variety of objects that will float or sink (e.g. a rock, a ping-pong ball,
styrofoam)
Procedure
- Make a chart with three
columns on the chalkboard. Label the first column
"Object," the second column "Prediction," and the third column "Outcome."
- Show each object to the class and write the name of the object in the first
column of the chart.
- Poll the students on whether or not they think the object will float in water.
- Write their predictions in the second column of the chart.
- Choose a volunteer to test the object.
- Write the outcome of the experiment in the third column of the chart.
- Continue this procedure for the remaining objects.
- Ask the children
what would happen if they were in the water. Discuss
some of the ways they could be safe in the water (e.g. PFD's, supervision, following
rules). Show some examples of PFD's and how they are used.
