Grand Finale
Grades
1-2
by Debra Garrett, Augusta, GA
2000 "Teacher of the Year" Award nominee
Objectives
- To review the 8 Risk Watch safety areas
- Each child will illustrate and describe a safety rule covered in the Risk
Watch curriculum
Materials
- Risk Watch safety icon cards
- white paper
- construction paper
- crayons
- glue sticks
- binder
Procedure
- The teacher will name each of the 8 Risk Watch safety topics, one at
a time, and have a student find the icon card that symbolizes each topic.
- As each card is shown, the teacher will ask the students to remember and discuss
all the safety rules associated with that topic.
- The teacher will assign each student an area of safety. The child must choose
a safety rule for that Risk Watch area and illustrate it on white paper
with crayon.
- The student must then dictate or write a sentence to go with their safety
rule on their paper.
- The student will then glue the picture on a piece of construction paper.
- Each student will "show and tell" their
picture to the class.
- The teacher will
laminate the pictures and place them in a binder. The
title page could say "Our RISK WATCH Book of Safety".
- The class will read the book during center time in the reading area of the
classroom. Students can read the book to other classes. The book can be displayed
with other class projects at a RISK WATCH Fair.
