Risk
Watch Go Fish
Grade 1
By:
Michele Clayton, San Pedro, CA
2002 Teacher of the Year
Objective
- Students will be able to
identify selected Risk Watch vocabulary and safety pictures.
Materials
- One deck of safety cards
for each group of 3-5 children. These can be pre-made by students or the teacher.
- Each pair of cards contains
a picture of the safety item (smoke detector, PFD) and the word under it.
Rules
The game is similar to the childrens fish card game. The object of the game
is to be the player with the most pairs.
1. The dealer deals 5 cards to each player clockwise.
2. If any player has a pair he/she may take place them face down in front of them.
They may immediately draw 2 more cards.
3. The player to the left of the dealer goes first. He/she may ask any other player
if they have a card to make a match/pair. For example, the player whose turn it
is may ask another player if they have a PFD. If the player they ask does have
a PFD then they give it to the person asking. That person then has a pair and
places the pair face down and continues their turn. They continue until the person
they ask does not have a card to make a match. They then have to go fish
or draw a card from the deck.
4. The play then passes to the person on their left.
5. Play continues until all cards are gone from the deck. The player with the
most pairs is the winner. Or everyone wins because they all played the game and
you dont have to have 1 winner!
Extension
- All cards can be made to
pertain to one lesson only.

1. Have the children make
some playing cards in class. Give them some blank cards to take home to have their
families complete the game. Have the children play the game with their families.
2. Make the cards with the words you want the children and their families to learn.
The children and their families can complete the cards by adding the illustrations.
