Risk Watch Safety Spinner
Grade 1

By: Michele Clayton, San Pedro, CA
2002 “Teacher of the Year”

Objective

  • Students will demonstrate knowledge in all 8 risk areas.
Risk Watch Safety Spinner example

Preparation

  • Safety spinners are made by reducing the size of the icon cards.
  • All icon cards are placed on a blank spinner card.
  • Children can play with partners or small groups.

Procedure

1. The first student spins the spinner and names the icon card.
2. The student then names a related risk. For example, if the spinner landed on the fire and burn icon the student might say, “Stop, Drop, Roll, Cool, and Call if your clothes catch on fire.”
3. Then the next person spins the safety spinner.
4. If the next student lands on the same card then they must name a different rule, risk, or objective learned in that lesson. If they can’t they can ask another member of the group for help. (When children can teach you know they know!)
5. Play continues until the time limit given has ended or until each player has a given number of turns.

Extension

1. Players can tally their responses. If they can think of an answer, they score a point. If they help a friend,
they score a point.
2. Players can take a counter (button, shell) from the pile when they give a correct answer. Or they can congratulate each other when they remember something they learned in that lesson!
3. Players can name the risk and a preventative measure or answer the question, “what should I do?” when they land on an icon card.
4. Players can tell a make-believe story that would include a risk from the lesson that the spinner lands on.

Home Link

  • The students can make their own “home game”.
