Risk Watch: Make Time For Safety
Risk Watch Lesson Plans

The Category Game
Grades 3-4

Objective

  • Students will be able to demonstrate and reinforce their knowledge of Risk Watch risk areas and work effectively in teams.

Core Subject Integration

  • Language arts, health and safety, math

Materials

  • chalkboard
  • Risk Watch Icon Cards
  • construction paper
  • scissors
  • tape
  • Category Game questions (you may write additional questions)

Procedure

  1. Tape the 8 Risk Watch icon cards in a horizontal line across the chalkboard. (To shorten lesson time, combine categories as shown below.)
  2. Cut out 25 large construction paper squares. Label the squares with the following amounts (five each): $5, $10, $15, $20, $25. Laminate the squares for durability.
  3. Tape a column of squares, in increasing dollar amounts, under each of the category headings.
  4. Divide the class into teams and ask each team to choose a spokesperson.
  5. Teams should take turns choosing a category and a dollar amount. Ask the team a question related to that category. The team may discuss the question and should announce its answer through a spokesperson. Make the questions more difficult as the dollar amounts increase. If a team answers correctly, it gets to collect the square. If team answers incorrectly, the question goes to another team. The team with the highest score wins the game.
