Grades 3/4, 5/6, 7/8

By: Rae McMullen, Calgary, Alberta, Canada
2003 Teacher of the Year

Objective

Language Learning, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Heath and Life Skills.

Materials

  • Paper and pencils
  • Risk Watch information cards
  • Access to the Internet
  • Digital camera and software to download pictures
  • Computers with Microsoft PowerPoint software
  • Various props necessary for photos

Procedure

  • Each student chooses a Risk Watch topic that they are interested in.
  • Students review the Risk Watch information cards and other research sources for information on their chosen topic area.
  • Students identify 10 main ideas or safety messages that they feel are important in the chosen Risk Watch area.
  • Students then write short paragraphs about the safety messages they have identified.
  • After they have written their messages, the students decide on the photo or series of digital photos that would best exemplify their message.
  • Props are brought from home or found in the school to assist with portraying the specific messages.
  • Digital photos are taken of the students or by the students to illustrate the messages in their written paragraphs.
  • The photos are then downloaded on the computer.
  • The students then create a PowerPoint presentation with their digital photos and text they have written.
  • The students choose the placement of the text/photos within the presentation and transitions between slides.
  • The PowerPoint presentations are then shared with their own class, other classes, the whole school and their families.
  • If the students have Internet access and e-mail then their presentations can be emailed to their homes.

This lesson is adaptable to each grade level based on the specific knowledge of the Risk Watch topic that is intended for the grade. The ability to write more sophisticated paragraphs and create more intricate presentations with increase with the age of the students.
