Risk Watch: Make Time For Safety
Risk Watch Lesson Plans

Safe/Unsafe Story Game
Grades 3-4

Spinner example

Objective

  • Students will write creative stories in groups about safe and unsafe behaviors, using their knowledge of Risk Watch.

Core Subject Integration

  • Language arts, health and safety

Materials

  • paper
  • pencils
  • spinners (plain paper plates, markers, construction paper, fasteners)

Procedure

  1. Divide your class into groups of four.
  2. Make one spinner for each group. Using a marker, divide a paper plate into three sections. Label the sections "Safe," "Unsafe," and "Your Choice." Cut out an arrow from the construction paper and fasten it to the center of the paper plate using a fastener.
  3. Give each group a spinner and a piece of writing paper. Have each group decide on a title for their Risk Watch story and write it at the top of the paper.
  4. Students should take turns using the spinner and then writing a few lines of their story.
    1. If the arrow on the spinner points to the "Safe" section, the student should write about safe behaviors. (For example: "Molly decided to ride her bike to the store. On her way out the door, she grabbed her blue bike helmet.")
    2. If the arrow points to the "Unsafe" section, the student should write about unsafe behaviors. (For example: "Juan and his friends were spending the day at the mall. They decided it would be fun to try to run up the "down" escalator.")
    3. If the arrow points to the "Your Choice" section, the student gets to write about a safe or unsafe behavior.
  5. Students continue to play until they finish their story.
  6. Each group should pick one student to read the story to the class.
  7. Publish the stories in a class safety book or post them on a bulletin board.
