Risk Watch Safety
Box

5-6
Objective
- Students will create a personalized safety box including each of the eight
risk areas, which will be individually represented on pieces of poster board.
The students will promote their safety box to students in lower grades once their
safety boxes are completed.

Materials
- one cereal box per student
- crayons, markers, or colored pencils
- 16-20 pieces of
7" x11 1/2" white poster board (for each student)
- sheets of construction paper
- scissors
- tape or glue
Procedure
- Glue construction paper to the outside of an empty cereal box.
- Cut a slit 7" x 1" on
the top of the cereal box, to allow 16-20 pieces of poster board into
and out of the box.
- Create safety messages by drawing pictures on pieces of paper. Color the pictures,
then cut them out and glue them to the outside of the box.
- Cut 16-20 pieces
of 7" x 11 1/2" white poster board per student.
- On each of the 16-20 piece of poster board, create at least eight safe and
eight unsafe pictures and write:
On the top: "Am I Safe?"
In the middle: A picture of a safe or unsafe object.
On the bottom: Write "Safe" or "Not Safe" (depending
on the picture).
- On the top of each
poster board, paste a tab that says: "Pull Up."
Once the project is complete, put the poster boards in the box and have the
5th and 6th graders go to the younger classrooms and promote
