Puzzle example

It's Puzzling!
Grades 7-8

Objectives

  • Students will be able to work cooperatively to complete the "What's A Risk" puzzle and will be able to identify one risk found in his/her puzzle piece.

Core Subject Integration

  • Health and safety, language arts

Materials

  • large "What's a Risk" poster found in the back pocket of Risk Watch module.
  • newsprint or chalkboard
  • index cards

Procedure

  1. Assign a small group of students to color the poster.
  2. Laminate the poster for durability.
  3. Cut the poster into puzzle pieces. If possible, cut the poster into pieces reflecting the number of students in the class.
  4. Distribute one puzzle piece to each student.
  5. Ask students to identify one risk found on his/her piece of the puzzle. Write the risk on an index card with a recommendation to eliminate the risk on the back of the card.
  6. Have students tape the index cards on the chalkboard or newsprint.
  7. Have students work to find a piece(s) to fit their piece of the puzzle. Students will continue working to complete the puzzle. Display the completed puzzle on the chalkboard or bulletin board.

Once the puzzle is complete, review the list of risks with the entire class. Ask students to recommend ways to eliminate the risks. Compare the class suggestions with the recommendations written on the back of the index cards.
