Riding and Walking with Dignity

Objectives
- Students will design a bike/walking obstacle course by using their Risk Watch knowledge.
- Students will make road signs and explain the proper procedure for crossing the street.
- Students will describe safety precautions for bicycling.
- Students will write short stories, raps, and songs about Bike and Pedestrian Safety.

Materials
- orange cones
- poster boards (6-red, 5-white, 1-yellow)
- assorted construction paper
- pencils/pens
- paper
- markers (6 boxes)
- note pad
Procedure
Sit back and enjoy, we're going to take you on a "Joy Ride".
- Divide the class into cooperative learning groups, with three or four students in each group.
- Assign each group a task:
- Design the obstacle course
- Place cones along the course
- Design road signs
- Bring bikes to school (contact parents) along with helmets and pads.
- Send home a parent letter asking for family involvement.
- Invite a speaker to come to class and discuss bike safety. NOTE: Students have already been briefed on Bike and Pedestrian Safety from Risk Watch information.
- Team A
will setup obstacle course on school campus. Team B&C
will place cones and posters/road signs along the course.
Posters will be attached to the cones. Now we're ready for
the ride.Bikers put on your equipment and take your positions
on your bike. NOTE: Other students will observe and write
down errors for class discussion.
- Place bikes on bike ramp.
- Walkers will cross the street while others will play the roles of driving vehicles.
- Students
will pick up all equipment and come back to class to discuss
their errors and accomplishments. Our very own WSMS
TV station did the video taping.
- Students
wrote a creative rap, short story & song, then shared
with the class.
- Students receive a certificate.
