Lesson Plan: Safety Sleuths to the Rescue

First/Second Grade

Identify and work to eliminate electrical safety hazards in the home.

Objectives

Identify unsafe outlets, cords, and plugs.

The Sparky® Safety Sleuths help Mr. Plug® identify wrong outlet, cord, and plug uses and correct them.

Preparation

  1. Provide each child with eight 6" x 6" blank paper cards and markers.
  2. Provide photo or drawn cards to review.
    • Overloaded outlet
    • Frayed cord
    • Draped cord
    • Light switch touched with wet hands
    • Pull plug out by cord
    • Too bright bulb lamp
    • Cord under the rug
    • Carrying an appliance by the cord

Procedure

  1. Talk about the uses of outlets, cords, and plugs.
  2. Using the cards you created, challenge the students to create new cards that correct the problem identified in group discussion with each of the photos.
