Lesson Plan: Decision Time
First/Second Grade
Identify outdoor electrical safety hazards.
Objectives
Determine the safe behavior regarding outdoor electrical safety after reading the scenario provided.
Preparation
- Review teacher information on outdoor electrical safety in the Electrical Information Guide.
- Download and copy Electrical Student Worksheet for each student.
Procedure
- Review the concept from the outdoor electrical safety information.
- If you see lightning, go inside immediately.
- Lightning is electricity.
- Stay away from lightning.
- Don't stand out in open or under a tree!
- Explain to the students that electricity comes in many ways. Some are found in homes and businesses, and some in nature.
- Distribute a worksheet to each student.
- Have each student review the two paragraphs. One paragraph focuses on children using safe behaviors. The other paragraph identifies unsafe decision- making behavior. Students will select the safer paragraph and circle it. Students will rewrite the unsafe story to make it safer; describing what should have been done.
- After the students are finished, review the paragraphs together and discuss.
Extension
Have students create their own safe and unsafe stories to correct and share.
