Sparky Bookmark
You're curled up in your favorite chair reading a book. Before you know it, it's time for bed, so you put the book down and climb under the covers. The next day, you pick up your book. Uh-oh! You don't remember what page you read last and now you have to flip through the whole book to find your place. This doesn't have to happen again! I'm going to show you how to make a fun Sparky bookmark.
What you need: a plain business-size envelope, a pencil, a ruler, scissors, crayons or markers
What to do:
- Find one of the bottom corners of the envelope. Using your pencil, draw a 2 1/2 inch (6 1/2 centimeter) square at the edge of the envelope.
- Using your scissors, carefully cut along the lines. (Young children should ask a grown-up for help with the scissors.)
- The piece you cut off should be a little square pocket that you can slip over the top edge of the page in your book. Try it and see how it works. You can use your scissors to make curves or angles on the cut edges of your bookmark if you want it to be a different shape.
- Now comes the fun part! Decorate your bookmark on both sides. Draw a picture of me, Sparky the Fire Dog, on one side and a picture of yourself on the other side. Write your name so people will know whose book it is. Use lots of colors to make it fun.
