Module 1 - Introduction to NFPA 13 and General Requirements
Upon completion of this module, participants should be able to:
- Describe the organization of the 2007 edition of the standard.
- Identify and apply new and revised terms used in the standard.
- Explain the need for, and function of, the owners certificate.
Module 2 - Classification of Occupancies and Commodities
Upon completion of this module, participants should be able to:
- Identify the occupancy classifications
- Identify the storage commodity classes
- Identify variables that have an impact on the determination of occupancy classification or commodity class
Module 3 - System Components and Hardware
Upon completion of this module, participants should be able to:
- Identify the different categories used to classify sprinklers
- Identify the requirements for other components of the sprinkler system
Module 4 - System Requirements

- Differentiate between the 4 primary types of sprinkler systems
- Identify variations of these types
Module 5 - Installation Requirements
Upon completion of this module, participants should be able to:
- Determine the location and spacing requirements for various types of sprinklers
- Apply the obstruction requirements for various types of sprinklers
Module 6 - Underground Piping
Upon completion of this module, participants should be able to:
- Locate the requirements for underground piping
- Discuss protection of underground piping
Module 7 - Hanging and Bracing
Upon completion of this module, participants should be able to:
- Locate and apply the requirements for hanging and bracing
- Explain seismic bracing calculations
Module 8 - Design Approaches - Occupancy Hazard
Upon completion of this module, participants should be able to:
- Identify the various sprinkler system design options
- Determine the appropriate density, area of operation, hose stream allowance and duration for various occupancies
- Identify the three means by which sprinkler requirements from other NFPA codes and standards are incorporated into NFPA 13
- Discuss design and installation requirements for special occupancies
Module 9 - Design Approaches – Storage Occupancies
Upon completion of this module, participants should be able to:
- Locate and apply the requirements for protection of storage
Module 10 - Design Deliverables – Plans and Calculations
Upon completion of this module, participants should be able to:
- Identify the information required for the approval of sprinkler plans and calculations
- Determine the effect of pressure and K-factor on a sprinklers flow
- Identify the various causes of pressure loss in sprinkler piping
Module 11 - Design Deliverables – Water Supplies
Upon completion of this module, participants should be able to:
- Identify the types of water sources for automatic sprinkler systems
- Determine the capabilities of the sources to provide sufficient water for a sprinkler system
Module 12 - System Acceptance Documentation
Upon completion of this module, participants should be able to:
- Complete appropriate system documentation
- Explain system acceptance requirements
- Describe required acceptance test
