NFPA at the First Annual Sprinkler Congress

Amanda Kimball in Brazil

Amanda Kimball attended the First Annual Sprinkler Congress (CBSpk) hosted by the Brazilian Sprinkler Association (ABSpk) in Guaruja, Brazil. The event brought together manufacturers, designers, installers, emergency responders, approval authorities, and users to share knowledge and viewpoints from working in Brazil and around the world.  Amanda spoke about a recently completed Foundation project on the impact of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recommendations ten years after The Station Nightclub fire. The NIST recommendations included more stringent requirements for automatic sprinklers in new and existing nightclubs. The presentation was included in a session that also included talks about the deadly Kiss Nightclub fire in Santa Maria, Brazil in 2013, which had similarities to The Station Nightclub fire. While in Brazil, Amanda was asked for an interview with Emergência Magazine about the NIST project and the Foundation’s work that will be published in January.

NFPA staff travels to Brazil

NFPA staff in Brazil

NFPA's Don Bliss and Olga Caledonia traveled to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Brazil in October. While in Rio, they met with the Rio Fire Department to continue NFPA’s support for the NFPA 1 adoption process, which is expected to be completed in the coming months.

They also visited the São Paulo Fire Department, which is responsible for protecting the most populous city in the western hemisphere. São Paulo currently references more than a dozen NFPA standards in its fire code. Don and Olga are actively working toward further collaboration with the fire department and have offered additional NFPA resources to support their strategic planning efforts. While in São Paulo, they also attended Faculdades Integradas de São Paulo (FISP) – the International Safety and Protection Fair – a trade show that takes place in São Paulo every two years.

Bliss and Caledonia also visited Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT), the national standards developer in Brazil (equivalent to ANSI). ABNT currently distributes our codes and standards in Brazil.
