The standards development process

One of the most notable features about NFPA standards is that they are developed in an open consensus-based process

Virtually every building, process, service, design and installation is affected by NFPA’s 300+ codes and standards. Our codes and standards, all available for free online access, reflect changing industry needs and evolving technologies, supported by research and development and practical experience. NFPA encourages public participation in the development of all its standards.

The four fundamental steps in the NFPA standards development process are:

  1. Get involved and make recommended changes to a standard during the “Public Input” period
  2. Make comments on recommended changes to a standard during the “Public Comment” period
  3. Take part or get updates on debate on recommended changes to a standard during NFPA’s Technical Meeting (Tech Session)
  4. Learn if the Standards Council issues the standard or takes other action (Standards Council Action)
