Report: NFPA's "Burns Seen in Hospital Emergency Rooms in 2008 by Burn Type and Victim's Age"
Author: Marty Ahrens
Issued: September 2009

In 2008, an estimated 216,100 people went to emergency rooms (ERs) because of various types of burn injuries, according to data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC’s) National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS). While 55% of the burn injuries were thermal burns, only 13% were due to fire or flames. Forty-two percent were other nonfire thermal burns. These typically resulted from contact with hot objects.
