NFPA estimates that an average of 450 structure fires in prisons and jails per year were reported to U.S. fire departments during 2011-2015. These fires caused an estimated average of 9 civilian injuries and $3.4 million in direct property damage per year. There were no reported civilian deaths in these facilities. Forty percent of fires in these properties began in either the laundry room or area or in the bedroom or cell.
