April 28, 2022– Today marks the day that the “Fire Service Safety Stand Down Quiz” Sweepstakes goes live to reinforce the messages and practices that are part of this year’s Safety Stand Down theme, “Situational Awareness: The Foundation for Good Decision-Making.” The 2022 Safety Stand Down campaign will run June 19-25.
The Safety Stand Down campaign and quiz is organized by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) Safety, Health & Survival Section, the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC), and the Fire Department Safety Officers Association (FDSOA) so that the nation’s more than 29,000 fire departments can focus on a particular responder safety concern during a set week in June. This year, situational awareness takes center stage so that firefighters are prepared to solve problems, prevent bad outcomes, and make better decisions in high stress environments including structure fires, EMS calls, wildland incidents, roadway response, and during acts of violence.
Emergency services personnel are encouraged to take and promote the Safety Stand Down quiz, which features 10 questions and is now available at www.nfpa.org/fireservicequiz. Those who complete the quiz by Wednesday, June 22, 2022, at 11:59 p.m. ET will be automatically entered in a sweepstakes with 20 randomly selected participants winning a signed copy of the book, Situational Awareness for Emergency Response by Richard B. Gasaway, CSP and another 200 randomly selected participants winning a limited-edition challenge coin commemorating this year’s Safety Stand Down theme.
During the week of June 19-25, agencies across the country are asked to suspend all non-emergency activities and train on situational awareness. An entire week is provided to ensure that all shifts and personnel can participate. In the weeks leading up to Safety Stand Down, fire leaders and training officers can visit the campaign site to access great resources and relevant insights – new tools will be added on a regular basis.
