August 14, 2023 – The Fire Protection Research Foundation (FPRF), the research affiliate of the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®), will host the 26th annual Suppression, Detection and Signaling Research and Applications Symposium (SUPDET® 2023) from September 12-14, 2023 at the Crowne Plaza Chicago-Northbrook in Northbrook, IL.
Since 1997, the Foundation has organized the annual SUPDET conference, bringing together leading experts in the field of fire protection engineering including designers, manufacturers, installers, and AHJs, to share recent research and developments on techniques used for fire suppression, detection, and signaling. This year’s program features 30 presentations focusing on the latest topics and benefits from research related to energy storage systems (ESS), lithium-ion batteries, fluorine-free and other foams, cybersecurity, emerging technologies, such as AI, and more.
Topics of particular interest include:
- The impact of Modern Vehicle Hazards in Parking Garages & Vehicle Carriers
Kevin Carr, NFPA; Victoria Hutchison, FPRF
- Final Validation Testing of the Lading Fluorine-Free Foals for Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Applications
Jerry Back, Jensen Hughes
- Mitigation of Runaway and Propagation in Lithium-ion Battery Packs
J.G. Quintiere, Q dot LLC
- Automatic Storage Retrieval Systems – Testing for the Future
Ingunn Haraldseid, AutoStore
- Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Plan Review: Harnessing Technology to Solve Legacy Workflow
Robert Solomon and Matthew Foley, SLS Consulting, LLC
- Smoke Detector Spacing on High Ceilings
Scott Lang, Honeywell; Mishuk Datta, Jensen Hughes
- Panel Discussion: Evaluating Data & Voice Signals in Pathway Survivable Cables for Life Safety Systems
Richard Roberts, Honeywell Fire; Alan Perdue, Safer Buildings Coalition; Allan Sanedrin, UL Solutions; and Jacqueline Wilmot, FPRF

About the Fire Protection Research Foundation
The
Fire Protection Research Foundation (FPRF or Foundation) plans, manages, and communicates research on a broad range of fire safety issues in support of the NFPA mission. The Foundation, an affiliate of NFPA, was born out of a growing need for research that better informs the expanding body of NFPA codes and standards in 1982. Today, the FPRF has a much broader reach, given a wide array of emerging hazards, persistent life safety challenges, and global demand.
About the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®)
Founded in 1896, NFPA® is a global self-funded nonprofit organization devoted to eliminating death, injury, property and economic loss due to fire, electrical and related hazards. The association delivers information and knowledge through more than 300 consensus codes and standards, research, training, education, outreach and advocacy; and by partnering with others who share an interest in furthering the NFPA mission.
